Deskpro provides SSL for both custom and regular domains, but if you have configured a custom domain name for your helpdesk, you may also want to use a custom SSL certificate.
Custom SSL costs $50/month to cover additional hosting costs (you get a dedicated IP address and a dedicated node balancer). Please note that SSL on your main .deskpro.com domain is always free; this surcharge is only for custom SSL certificates for use with your custom domain names.
Obtaining a certificate
You need to purchase a certificate yourself from your preferred issuer. If you do not have a preference, you can usually get an SSL certificate through your domain registrar. Or you can use a site like SSL Shopper to compare issuers.
Note that your issuer will ask for a "CSR". A CSR, or Certificate Signing Request, contains information about your organisation such as your locality and contact email address, and public key. You typically also generate a private key at the same time.
You or your sysadmin need to generate the CSR. Deskpro is NOT responsible for generating your CSR or generating a private key for you.
Sending us your certificate
After you have obtained a certificate, open a ticket with Deskpro and send us:
- Your certificate file in PEM format. Typically this is a .crt, .cer or .pem file you get from your issuer. If your issuer has provided you with additional "bundle" certificate(s), please send those too.
- Your private key.
Securely sending your private key
If you are worried about sending your private key in the clear, the easiest thing to do is:
- Add a passphrase to your private key (example). We suggest using a long string of English words separated by spaces that can be easily communicated.
- Send the encrypted private key to us in a ticket.
- Call us directly (we have local phone numbers for many countries listed at the top of our website or for US and Canada you can call us toll-free at +1-888-DESKPRO). Give the agent on the phone your passphrase verbally and quote your ticket reference number.
Or if you have a preferred alternative means of sending the private key securely, feel free to suggest it in your ticket.
