Apps and widgets are very similar concepts. The main distinguishing factor is that widgets may be created and managed from within Deskpro itself, where apps are generally installed via “packages” or bundles of code published by Deskpro or third party developers.

Widgets make it easier to get started with simpler apps. For example, if you wanted a button on all tickets that revealed a link to a website or table of information pulled in from an API, then widgets are a quick and easy way to implement these.

When the functionality of an app is more complex, we generally recommend that the app is built as a package. A package is really just a zip file that contains information about how the app is configured as well as the code and assets of the app itself. Think of it like a miniature web application that is rendered within Deskpro.

Behind the scenes apps and widgets are technically the same thing, and are treated in the same way by Deskpro. The reason that they’re named differently is to make the management of each of these concepts in Deskpro distinct.
