Can I set a custom file storage location for my helpdesk's attachments?
Deskpro instances support several storage methods for attachments. This guide is for setting a custom file storage location but will briefly go other the other file storage methods you have available. We currently support the following storage methods:
Database - Store all helpdesk files within your helpdesks database (not recomened for large helpdesks)
FileSystem - Store all helpdesk files in a specified location on your server including mounted network drives.
Amazon S3 - You can configure an Amazon S3 bucket as a storage location, we have a guide on this here
To change the storage method or location you will first need to select 'File Storage' from the services card on your instance overview.

This will show you the current storage type and the current storage path

Clicking 'Change Storage Mechanism' will give you the option to switch between the storage type and set a custom storage path.

Storage Mechanism - This dropdown will let you change the type between the above listed method, FileSystem is the default.

Attachment Path - Here you can specify a custom location on your server for storing file attachments. This can be either a local or a remote storage location that is mounted within the operating system. Once the storage location is changed the helpdesk instance will be restarted. This will move all attachments from the previous location to the newly specified directory.
If you are using a remote storage location such as an NFS or SAMBA share you may want to consider disabling attachment backups from the daily backup deskpro takes. If you take other backups of these locations disabling Deskpro's backup of them will mean the daily backup runs quicker and depending on the number / size of attachments can reduce network bandwidth usage. Our guide on instance backups and enabling/disabling attachement backups can be found here.
You then have a further two options when setting a custom directory for attachments

Require new directory to be empty - This is recommended to make sure there are no issues with existing files in the location that you specifiy. If you untick this box you will get another option that will delete any pre-existing files in the location before attachments are moved across.

Update config only - This option will just update the instances configuration file to the new attachment location. This option should only be used if you have or are planning to manually move your instance attachments.
Some Cloud providers include a temporary ephemeral disk, which are intended for temporary files and will be wiped when the VM is stopped or during maintenance.
If you are using a Cloud VM, and have purchased additional persistent storage to hold attachments, please confirm you are not moving your attachment storage to the temporary storage disk.
If you accidentally store your attachments on a temporary/ephemeral disk, and you do not have a recent backup, Deskpro Support will NOT be able to assist you in the event of any data loss.
